Austria has officially experienced the longest heatwave since measurements began, with 33 consecutive days reaching temperatures above 30°C. ORF meteorologist Marcus Wadsak confirmed the unprecedented duration on Tuesday, noting that the brief cooling now underway will likely be short‑lived.
A Heatwave Without Precedent
The extreme period began on 17 June, when 31.1°C was recorded in Feldkirch. Temperatures climbed steadily, peaking on 29 June with 40.1°C in Bad Deutsch‑Altenburg, Lower Austria — one of the highest values ever measured in the country.
On 19 July, the heat persisted with 30.9°C in Fürstenfeld (Styria) and Güssing (Burgenland). In total, Austria logged 33 “heat days” in a row, defined as days with temperatures above 30°C.
Wadsak emphasized the historic nature of the event:
“Eine ähnlich lange Hitzewelle haben wir in Österreich noch nie zuvor gemessen.”
Cooling Phase Will Be Brief
A spell of unstable weather is currently bringing cooler air, showers, and thunderstorms, offering temporary relief. But according to Wadsak, the heatwave is not truly over.
The 15‑day trend suggests temperatures will rise again by the weekend, with a new heatwave likely in early August.
Weather Outlook for the Coming Days

Wednesday Forecast — Mostly sunny and dry; 21–27°C.
Thursday Forecast — Cooler, unsettled with showers; 18–25°C.
Friday Forecast — More sunshine, largely dry; 19–27°C.
Saturday Forecast — Sunny and warm; 23–29°C, locally near 30°C.
While Austria has seen intense heatwaves before, meteorologists say the length and persistence of this one reflect broader warming trends across Europe. The country has already recorded multiple temperature records this summer, and experts warn that longer, more frequent heatwaves could become the norm.
